What to Expect

Issues your child may face at University.

University is different from school and often the transition from one to the other can cause some students to experience difficulties finding their feet and settling in. They go from being a big fish in a little pond to a little fish in a big pond, which can be very daunting.

Some of the areas which may cause concern are:

  • what to expect in lectures and tutorials
  • understanding university jargon ( credit point, grade point average, core, elective etc)
  • knowing the time they should spent on study in addition to lecture and tutorial time
  • using a large and different library
  • using the University on-line learning, computer and email systems
  • making friends
  • dealing with University staff
  • knowing where to go and who to ask for help
  • coping with the amount of reading and number of assignments required
  • knowing how to write a university standard essay/assignment/practical report
  • finding they way around the Campus
  • balancing paid work and study

The University provides assistance to students in all these areas and the role of the Macquarie Transition Program is to introduce new students to the basics of university study and ways of accessing additional help if it is needed.

Although at University students are expected to be much more independent than at school, you are not completely on your own in a system that doesn't care.

What advice is there for parents?
