Become a Mentor

Interested in becoming a Mentor, but not quite sure what it’s all about?  This page has all the information you need to know about Mentoring involves, eligibility, and how to apply.

Who are Mentors@Macquarie?

Mentors@Macquarie is Macquarie University’s oldest mentoring program that assists first year students with their transition to university life.  The program trains, assists, and supports current students in their 2nd year and above to serve as a peer mentor to new students and to guide them through their first semester of studies.

What does a Mentor do?

A mentor provides support for their first year students, or ‘mentees’, by assisting them with their transition to university life.  While Mentors are expected to provide their mentees with the support and assistance necessary to have a smooth transition, Mentors are not expected to provide academic advice or tutoring services to first year students.

What does being a Mentor involve?

To successfully take part in the program, Mentors must undertake three main areas of participation:

  • Mentor Training:  In order to participate as a Mentor, it is compulsory to attend training.  This happens in the break between Semester 2 exams finishing and Semester 1 commencing.  For more information about the kinds of skills covered in our Mentor training program, check out our Training page.
  • Academic Orientation:  All mentors must attend Academic Orientation, as this is the time when you get allocated your mentees.  The dates for this event change year to year, however it traditionally happens the week before Semester 1 classes commence.
  • Semester involvement:  After Academic Orientation, there are many different initiatives that you can choose to get involved to enrich your mentoring experience, such as Careers Mentoring, Learning Skills Mentoring, Wellbeing Mentoring, involvement in MACro & MacBrain (the Mentors@Macquarie Vlog & Blog respectively) and many more!

Why should I apply to be a Mentor?

Participating in the Mentors@Macquarie Program provides you with many opportunities for social and professional development.  Throughout the training and hands on experience, Mentoring develops the essential skills that employers look for, such as leadership, team work, and communication and problem solving skills.  And throughout it all, you have the chance to meet heaps of people across the University, not just in your area of study.

Can I apply to be a Mentor?

All Macquarie University students that have studied at the North Ryde Campus for at least a year are eligible to apply.
