Macquarie University is proud to celebrate its long history of teaching and research excellence.

This year, Macquarie is acknowledging the nexus between teaching and research by bringing our staff and students together to jointly celebrate the highly-commended finalists and winners for both the Vice-Chancellor’s Learning and Teaching Awards and the Research Excellence Awards.

Excellence in teaching and research together ensure our staff and students are at the cutting edge of learning and innovation.

“The fundamental interdependence of learning and teaching and research cannot be overstated,” said Professor Sakkie Pretorius, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).

“Research, and research-enriched learning and teaching, are what makes a university. The Academic Staff Awards, combining the award ceremonies for the Vice-Chancellor’s Learning and Teaching Awards and the Research Excellence Awards, are a demonstration of Macquarie’s commitment to a culture of transformative learning in a research-enriched environment.”

Professor Kevin Jameson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) agreed, adding that at Macquarie, we pride ourselves in being home to a community of engaged pioneers.

“Without a doubt, our innovative learning and teaching practices and the unmistakable connection to research fosters a rich environment for our students, researchers, and staff to partner as co-creators and actively seek out solutions to some of the complex issues facing our world today,” he said.

“Teaching and engaging with students encourages us to think about the ‘big picture’, to question what really matters in our research contributions and why it matters more broadly to our society as a whole.

“Encouraging students in their thirst for knowledge and inspiring discovery is a unique opportunity we have as educators. Investing in our students of today fosters our researchers of future generations and is another way that our efforts in the classroom can pay long term dividends for research.”
