The Department of Physics and Astronomy invited industry and academics to attend an inaugural 3D Metal Printing Workshop recently to celebrate a new laser system that contributes to the University’s flagship 3D printing facility.

Professor Michael Withford, Director of the Australian National Fabrication Facility OptoFab Node located on campus, said: “One of our key aims is to grow our already successful industry partnerships by exploring the development of parts with our colleagues in Medicine and Engineering here on campus, and with local businesses who can see a real use for this technology in their manufacturing processes.”

Macquarie University Signing of Biostatics Collaboration Australia Prof Kevin Jameson & Prof Gillian Heller 23 June 2017 2017-0623

In late June on behalf of Macquarie, Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Registrar Professor Kevin Jameson and Head of Department of Statistics Professor Gillian Heller signed a consortium agreement with five other Australian universities (University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, Monash University, University of Queensland, University of Adelaide) to renew the Biostatistics Collaboration of Australia (BCA). BCA was formed to address the lack of skilled biostatisticians in Australia. This collaboration has been running successfully since 2001 and offers a consortium-model postgraduate program in Biostatistics. Under the BCA, each member university can take enrolments into a Master/Grad Dip/Grad Cert in Biostatistics, but responsibility for delivery of the constituent courses are divided among the member universities.

On 29 June, the University celebrated graduates at its traditional end-of-semester International Student Farewell Event. The event, organised by Student Engagement, began as a way for international students to mark their achievements since visa restrictions usually mean they have to leave the country before formal graduation ceremonies commence. Congratulations to all of the graduates!

PhD student Chi Yhun Lo recently held a small graduation ceremony for his music therapy students with hearing loss. The students have been learning to play instruments as part of a research project, being done in collaboration with Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia, which aims to uncover ways to improve communication and social wellbeing.

Chi also recently did an interview on 2SER’s Drive program about the research.
