Dear colleagues

I write to advise you that, after five years in the role, Deidre Anderson has advised me that she intends to step down as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students and Registrar) of Macquarie University. She will conclude her term in late April 2017.

Ms Anderson joined the University in 2002 and has served in various roles during her time here. In each of these roles, she has worked to improve the university experience for our students, and to support their personal development alongside their academic progress.

During her tenure as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students and Registrar), the Campus Wellbeing and Support Services functions were formed to address disparate and sometimes conflicting offerings, improving students’ access to help in times of need, while Campus Life provided structure and guidance to enable students to explore passions and interests outside the classroom. In addition, the Office of Governance Services was established in her portfolio, and has since grown to become an important resource in the management of the University’s operations.

Dee has been a national leader in the world of University sport and the development of student athletes at the highest levels. She is the current Chair of the board of Australian University Sport and has contributed greatly to the development of sports and sports scholars at Macquarie University. She also volunteers for charitable causes and organisations close to her heart, and I commend her for her generosity of time and spirit.

In April, Dee will graduate from her PhD at Macquarie, and I congratulate her on this achievement. Graduation marks the start of a new chapter for every student, and Dee has expressed her desire to explore new personal and professional directions as a result. I wish her well in those pursuits.

Dee’s departure presents an opportunity for the University to consider its student experience activities and their alignment with its academic mission. Over the coming weeks and months, I will be consulting with managers and staff about how we might enhance that alignment to continue the development of student support as we move forward.

I am very grateful for her service to the University, and I wish her every success in her future endeavours.

Sincerely,

SBD
