West 5 (X8) carpark work has commenced

west5

Work has commenced to extend West 5 (X8) carpark to create 746 spaces, increasing the total capacity of West 5 to approximately 1330. The additional spaces will maintain the campus parking balance when South 2 (C2, C3 and E1) is demolished to allow construction of the previously announced project at 8-10 University Avenue.

West 5 will be extended northward toward Culloden Road with a new access off Link Road and internal connections to the existing carpark. The extension will be constructed of grass reinforced mesh with bitumen roadways similar to the existing car park, and include pedestrian walkways, lighting, CCTV cameras and help points.

Parking at the existing section of West 5 will not be affected by these works, and University permit holders may continue to access the car park via Link Road and Gymnasium Road. Weather permitting, the expanded carpark is scheduled to be be open for use in February 2018.

  1. Can you please ask them to clarifiy if this means that significant amount of undercover parking is now being replaced by open air parking, that is much worse for people with accessibility issues as it can take us longer to get into the car and this will now be in all weathers? Not the least of which it is worse for everyone in the increasingly hot and unpredictably rainy weather to have everything in open air and further to walk to, as mentioned by the other commenter.

    1. Hello, thanks for your comment. We will be addressing your concerns in next week’s issue. If you have any questions in the meantime please contact Rob on x1362. Thanks.

  2. No doubt, this will be welcome news for those working/studying on the western side of campus. However, what are the parking plans for the rest of the campus community, especially those working/studying on the eastern side?
I observed in a previous notification, that parking is planned to be provided on the perimeter of the campus, which is fine provided that it is evenly distributed. Whilst having to walk 1 km each way across campus every day may be considered healthy in clement conditions, in adverse weather (especially during mid-winter/mid-summer) it is more likely to have the reverse effect. With the imminent closure of the railway station, this will become a more significant issue.
I am interested in learning what specific plans the University has to equitably distribute parking around the campus perimeter. Thanks.
