Building Design

After ten years of constructing hermetically sealed, fully air-conditioned buildings, Macquarie University made a breakthrough in the design of the mixed mode commerce building. It is this design that has brought acknowledgment for architects DEM, along with Macquarie University, with the presentation of a Bronze Medal in the Green Buildings Awards 2003. These awards, conducted by The Architecture Show Magazine, in conjunction with The Francis Greenway Society, recognised the environmental sustainability of the project. Macquarie received the State Government Green Globe Award for Sustainability for the co-generation plant next to the Library. The plant uses gas to fuel two generators that produce electrical energy. The heat recovered from the generators is used to run an absorption chiller that produces chilled water and stores it in a 1.25 million litre tank for distribution around the University. This system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 44 per cent compared to a traditional system.
