What is Sustainability?
Sustainability is about improving the quality of life for each and every one of earth's inhabitants, now and in the future. This means ensuring that we do not deplete the planet's resources, and that access to these resources is fair and equitable. There are many different definitions of sustainable development and sustainability, but most agree on a balance between the common core principles of:
- Social justice;
- Environmental protection;
- Economic growth; and
- Diversity
Since the term Sustainable Development gained widespread recognition through the publication of the Brundtland Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987, governments, businesses, institutions and individuals around the world have made commitments towards a sustainable future. Through the establishment of a Sustainability Office on campus to oversee policies, plans and actions for sustainability, Macquarie University is now also making a strong commitment to a better future for students, staff and the wider community.
