Degrees and entry requirements

Degrees and entry requirements

To secure a guaranteed place in a bachelor degree, students are required to:

  • Successfully complete 12 credit points (4 units)
  • Meet the GPA requirements stipulated for the selected degrees available (see below)
  • Complete specific units outlined by the faculty offering the unit (if required)
  • Complete an academic communications unit (see below) in your first session of study.
Please note: for students who have achieved a HSC performance Band 4 or higher in English, are exempted from this requirement. However if the faculty of the degree you want to articulate into specifies an Academic Communications unit as part of the Next Step study plan, then you will still need to undertake the Academic Communications unit.

For each bachelor degree, students must obtain a specific Grade Point Average (GPA) in their Next Step studies to be eligible for that degree. Each degree also has an ATAR cut-off that applies if you completed the HSC or equivalent within the last two years (2015 or 2016). These ATAR restrictions do not apply to mature age applicants.

Please note that required ATAR scores (50, 55 or 60) and individual unit entry requirements must be met in order to be considered for specific degrees indicated below:

GPA of ≥ 3.0

Students will be eligible to accelerate into their chosen degree after completion of 2 units (6 credit points). Please see Accelerated Articulation

Please Note: To transfer from the Next Step program into a Macquarie bachelor degree, an application must be lodged. This is NOT an automatic process. Please see Articulation into a Degree for details of the application process.

If you are successful in transferring to a Macquarie degree, you will start with a new GPA of zero (0). However, the credit points for the units undertaken in the Next Step pathway will count towards your bachelor degree. For example, if your bachelor degree has a requirement of 96 credit points, then you would have already completed either 6 or 12 credit points towards that amount, depending if you accelerated into your degree or not.

Academic Communications unit

Students enrolled in the Next Step program are recommended to undertake an Academic Communications unit as part of their study plan. It is strongly recommended that students undertake an Academic Communications unit in their first session of study. The only exceptions are students who achieved an HSC performance Band 4 or higher in English. However, even if you meet the exemption criteria, if the faculty of the degree you want to articulate into specifies an Academic Communications unit as part of the Next Step study plan, then you will still need to undertake the Academic Communications unit.

These units are specifically designed to prepare students for academic requirements at a tertiary level. The Academic Communication units focus mainly on forming a solid foundation to assist students in developing critical and analytical skills in communication through reading, writing and the discussion of issues in their related area of study. Full detail of the unit description can be found below:

  • ACBE100       Academic Communication in Business and Economics
  • ACSC100       Academic Communication in Science
  • ACSH100       Academic Communication in the Social Sciences and Humanities

Please note students can only undertake one of the above Academic Communications units, as the units are Not Count for Credit (NCCW) with each other.

Example

Alisha completed her NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) in 2016, achieved an overall ATAR of 58, and would like to study a Bachelor of Science. She also achieved a HSC Performance band 3 in English.
The ATAR required to study science units (subjects) is 60, so she will not be able to study any science units whilst in the Next Step program. She then selects to study units indicated in the Next Step handbook in which she qualifies and has interest in. As she scored a band 3, she is also required to undertake an Academic Communications unit (preferably the unit relating to science, ACSC100, as that will be most beneficial for her).

Her enrolment may look like this:

Session 1, 2017
ACSC100 - Academic Communications in Science - she must undertake this unit in her first session of study as she did not achieve Band 4 in HSC English.
ANTH106 - Drugs Across Cultures

Session 2, 2017
PHL 131 - Mind, Meaning and Metaphysics
ANTH151 - Human Evolution and Diversity

If Alisha achieves 4 passes, which equates to an overall GPA of 2.0, she can then articulate into her degree of a Bachelor of Science in Session 1, 2018.

If Alisha achieves 2 credits after Session 1, she will be eligible for accelerated articulation and can start her Bachelor of Science in Session 2, 2017.
