Sophia University is a private Jesuit research university in Japan, with its main campus located near Yotsuya station, in an area of Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward. It takes its name from the Greek Sophia meaning "wisdom". The Japanese name, Jōchi Daigaku, literally means "University of Higher Wisdom". Sophia University was founded by Jesuits in 1913. It opened with departments of German Literature, Philosophy and Commerce, headed by its founder Hermann Hoffmann as its first official president.

Sophia's reputation for excellence in undergraduate education, outstanding graduate programs, and a competitive research environment enables it to maintain its ranking as one of Japan's top private universities. Students benefit immensely from the ability to study the latest developments in their chosen field of specialization with distinguished Japanese and international faculty members. All of Sophia University’s faculties and graduate schools welcome international students. 1,148 international students come from more than 60 countries and from all parts of the world. Its faculty includes members from more than 20 countries, and most faculty members have overseas study and research experience.

Sophia University has offered English-medium programs for more than 60 years. Reflecting the high regard in which its track record as a pioneer in global education is held, the University was recently chosen for a series of subsidy programs being implemented by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to internationalize universities in Japan, including the Top Global Universities Project and the Global 30 Project. These programs are helping to further strengthen the University's efforts to boost the global competency of our students.

At the same time, agreements with 206 overseas universities in 42 countries ensure the dynamic mobility of our students. Over 1,500 international students are studying at Sophia from around the world, and are fostering an internationalized campus culture. The university is also renowned for encouraging Japanese students to study abroad with a broad spectrum of programs.   • Have completed at least 1 semester in Macquarie university
  • GPA 3.0
  • Language requirement (Japanese or English)

Logistics Fees: No fee

Insurance: It is a requirement of the exchange program that all students must purchase their own travel insurance to cover them for the duration of their entire journey overseas.  

Program Costs: You remain enrolled at Macquarie University and continue to pay your tuition fees to Macquarie University. As an exchange student you pay no tuition fees to host university. However, you must also always be prepared for unexpected expenses, and should consider how you will be dealing with the expenses of your exchange before you leave your home country. Prior to departure, you will need to save sufficient funds to cover all of your expenses for the duration of your exchange. Some costs to consider include: airfares, students visa (if required), travel health insurance, accommodation, food, additional travel, entertainment, textbooks, incidental expense. If you wish to work while you are away, it is important to note that work rights for international students vary from country to country.
