English language requirements

English language requirements

All applicants need to provide evidence of English proficiency. However, not all courses require the same level of English proficiency. 

Standard English requirements    

Macquarie University requires the following as proof of meeting standard English language requirements (ie equal to IELTS 6.5):

The language in which you undertook this qualification must be English.

An approved qualification

A successfully completed approved qualification may be considered only if it has been completed within five years prior to the date the applicant will start the course at Macquarie University.

This limitation period does not apply to applicants who:

1. Meet the minimum institutional English language requirements AND can show evidence that they have continuously resided in an English-speaking country since the completion of their English studies until commencing studies at Macquarie University; or

2. Completed secondary studies under the GCE Advanced, Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Ordinary (GCSE) Level or IB curriculum with required results

Eligible students who do not meet the English language requirements for entry to Macquarie may be issued an offer of study that includes an English preparation program at the Macquarie University English Language Centre (packaged offer). International Students with a packaged offer can apply for one student visa covering both their English language and their course at Macquarie University.

Please note: All English language test scores must be less than two years old at the date of course commencement at Macquarie University.

Alternatively, documentary evidence of at least five years' residency in an English-speaking country is needed. Certified documentation (either a passport or visa) must be provided to support evidence of an applicant's residency. Applications are individually assessed on a case-by-case basis. If employed during this period, work reference letters on official organisational letterhead should be provided.

Special English requirements

Some Macquarie University programs have special English requirements (ie greater than IELTS 6.5). These programs are detailed in Table E.

Please note: International students need to submit test scores directly to Macquarie International as soon as they are available. An offer of admission may be made pending the receipt of an English test result if all other entry criteria are satisfied.
