Scholarships

Each year Macquarie University awards around $2.5 million in scholarships, most of which are given on the basis of financial need or other hardship. Others recognise factors such as leadership or voluntary experiences, or sporting achievement.

There’s a wide range of scholarships for students from all backgrounds, so be sure to check out what’s on offer.

Financial need

Macquarie Education Costs Scholarship (MECS)

Eligibility: Students who have been hampered by disadvantages beyond their control.

Value: $5086 per year for up to four years.

Applications: Applications for 2016 are now open at the UAC website.

All successful applicants will be able to demonstrate financial hardship. Applicants need to be in receipt of Youth Allowance or other means tested Commonwealth support. This equity based scholarship is designed to support recipients whose opportunities to study at university may have been hampered by situations out of their control.

Eligibility: Students relocating from regional and rural Australia with demonstrated financial hardship.

Value: $10174 per annum for up to four years.

Applications: Applications for 2016 are now open at the UAC website.

All successful applicants will be able to demonstrate financial hardship (applicants need to be in receipt of Youth Allowance or any other means tested Commonwealth support) and that they are relocating from a rural area to study at Macquarie University.

Macquarie University Refugee Scholarship

Eligibility: Students from a refugee background with demonstrated financial hardship

Value: $5086 per year for up to four years (value indexed each year).

Applications: Applications for 2016 are now open at the UAC website.

Macquarie University recognises the particular financial and other support needs of students from a refugee background. Two scholarships will be offered each year to students from refugee backgrounds. These scholarships complement the University's Refugee Mentoring Program, which aims to raise aspirations towards tertiary study among refugee children.

Eligibility: Indigenous students with demonstrated financial hardship

Value: $2543 per annum

The Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (ICECS) assists Indigenous students with demonstrated financial hardship with the costs associated with higher education.

ICECS is tenable for a maximum of four years of undergraduate study (subject to continuing eligibility).

Macquarie University Dunmore Lang College Regional and Rural Scholarship

Eligibility: Students relocating from regional and rural Australia.

Value: A fully funded standard room at DLC for up to four years of undergraduate study

This Macquarie University and Dunmore Lang College Regional and Rural scholarship was created in recognition of the initial and ongoing costs for a student relocating from regional and rural Australia to study at Macquarie University. Recipients of the Regional and Rural Scholarship also receive other forms of support.

Eligibility: Indigenous students with demonstrated financial hardship commencing tertiary study for the first time.

Value: $4823 (once in a lifetime scholarship).

The Indigenous Access Scholarship (IAS) assists Indigenous students with financial need who are commencing tertiary study for the first time. It is a once in a lifetime scholarship only.

Indigenous Commonwealth Accommodation Costs Scholarship (ICAS)

Eligibility: Indigenous students with demonstrated financial hardship relocating from a regional or remote area of Australia.

Value: $5087 pa (paid in two instalments of $2543.50 each).

Indigenous Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (ICAS) are open to commencing and continuing Indigenous students from regional and remote areas of Australia who have a demonstrated current financial hardship and who had to, or will have to, relocated to undertake their current higher education course of study.

The scholarship is tenable for a maximum of four years of undergraduate study.

Eligibility: Students enrolled or intending to enrol in a course leading to the award of a bachelor degree with a major in Actuarial Studies.

Value: $2,500 per annum tenable for one year.

The Macquarie University Family Scholarship was established to encourage the legacy of family members attending Macquarie across generations. It is awarded to an incoming student in any discipline.

Eligibility: New incoming full-time undergraduate student majoring in early childhood education.

Value: $2,500 tenable for one year.

Application: Closed.

This scholarship honours Ani's commitment to volunteering and her passion for early childhood education, her chosen career which she did not get to pursue because her life was so tragically cut short.

The purpose of the scholarship is to enable the holder to pursue a full-time program of study leading to a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education), within the Institute for Early Childhood at Macquarie University.

Eligibility: Continuing second year student enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration, the Bachelor of Commerce or the Bachelor of Science.

Value: $4000 tenable for one year only (x 2 scholarships for 2016).

The purpose of this scholarship is to support two students who are undertaking study at Macquarie University. One scholarship will be awarded to a continuing second year student enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration or the Bachelor of Commerce and one will be for a continuing second year student enrolled in the Bachelor of Science.

Leadership

Global Leadership Entry Program (GLEP)

Eligibility: Student nominated as part of the GLEP Program admissions application process

Value: $5000 for your first year of study at Macquarie University in 2017 (non deferrable). There are two scholarships available for 2017.

Application: No separate application is required. All successful applicants for the Global Leadership Entry Program will automatically be considered for the scholarship.

The Global Leadership Entry Program recognises students who are actively engaged in their local and global community to provide them with an early offer to Macquarie University and access to the Global Leadership Program based on their leadership qualities, extracurricular awards or achievements and academic results.

Selection criteria

  • Domestic students who have been made an offer for admission through the Global Leadership Entry Program for Session 1 2017.
  • Students who have demonstrated extensive engagement or significant achievement of service to local or wider community, resulting in the positive change or enhancement for the benefit of others.

Eligibility: Secondary students with an ATAR of 98.5 or above.

Value: $12,000 per year for up to 5 years.

Applications: Closed

The University invites final year secondary students expecting to receive an ATAR of 98.5 or above to apply for a Macquarie University Merit Scholarship. These highly competitive and non-deferrable scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit in the HSC or equivalent.

PACE Scholarship

Eligibility: New students with an ATAR of 93 or above, and non-current school applicants with an equivalent admissions rank or who have an offer of admission through the Mature Age Entry Scheme.

Value: $1,000 per year for up to 3 years.

Faculty of Science and Engineering Academic Achievement Entry Scholarships

Eligibility: Incoming undergraduate student (completed Year 12 in 2015) with an ATAR of 90 or more.

Value: $2,000 or $5,000

The Faculty of Science and Engineering are offering a range of academic scholarships for high achieving Year 12 HSC students commencing in one of the listed degrees in 2016.

Eligibility: Awarded to students for excellence in mathematics.

Value: $300 tenable for one year.

Application: Department of Mathematics.

One scholarship will be awarded for excellence in mathematics in the NSW/ACT Higher School Certificate to a first year student enrolled in the units MATH132 and MATH133.

Le Fevre Scholarship in Chemistry

Eligibility: Full-time students undertaking a Bachelor degree with a coherent study in chemistry.

Value: $2000 in the first year, $2100 in the second year and $2200 in the third year of the scholarship.

Scholarship recipients will be required to enrol in the following units during the period of the scholarship:

  • Year 1: CBMS101, CBMS103
  • Year 2: CBMS204, CBMS207, CBMS208
  • Year 3: At least 18 credit points of 300-level chemistry and meet the requirements of the Major in Chemistry.
