Commonwealth Assistance Notice

Commonwealth Assistance Notice

What is a CAN?

Your Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) is your official advice of your enrolment, CHESSN, and HELP debt for your unit(s) of study within a defined study period.  You should retain this notice for your records and for taxation purposes.

Please note: the CAN is not an invoice. Each study period, you should log into eStudent once you enrol in unit/s and print off your Statement of Charges in eStudent to arrange payment.

From May 2017, Commonwealth Assistance Notices (CANS) will no longer be sent in the post.

They will be sent to all eligible students via email to a student’s official email account. Please check this at least twice a week as this is the University's formal channel of communication.

Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) information on the CAN

The SSAF fee information should be shown on any CANs for main study period Sessions 1 and 2 and also for Macquarie University International College (MUIC) students. If the SSAF fee is shown on your CAN please check that you have paid this fee. If you have outstanding SSAF fees, please  log into the “My Finances” tab in eStudent. Please pay this amount as soon as possible as you will have been sanctioned for non-payment. For a list of payment methods, please see How to Pay.

When do I receive the CAN?

You will receive your Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) within 28 days after the census date for each study period you are enrolled into. The notice is currently sent to you in the mail using your stated postal address - please ensure your contact information is up to date. You can make changes to your contact details under the  "My Details" menu in eStudent.

We are currently investigating options to email this notice to your official student email account.

What to do?

You will need to keep this information as a record of any HELP debt which has been deferred to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) on your behalf.

You will have a certain amount of time to advise the University if you believe any information on your CAN is incorrect. This is usually 14 days from receiving the notice. Please check the CAN for the actual date which corrections can be requested by.

How to contact the University if any information is incorrect?

Please send an email enquiry to AskMQ with the words “Commonwealth Assistance Notice” in the subject line. Please ensure you provide full details of your name, Student ID and unit codes for which you believe there has been an error.

How to find your HELP Balance

You can use your CHESSN to access information on your HELP Balance at the myUniAssist link on the Study Assist website. Please note: it is too late to make any upfront payments to the University for the unit(s) of study. You will need to make any payments directly to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Please note: there is usually a lag of 4-6 months from when you enrol into a unit and have your fees deferred to a HELP loan to the time this debt appears on your MyUniAssist and MyGov portals. This is due to the reporting schedule between the Government and Universities occurring 4 times a year.

For more information on how to repay your HELP loan, please go to the StudyAssist government website.
