School of Christian Studies grows
Macquarie Christian Studies Institute closes
By now you will have heard of the financial difficulties
that have led the Macquarie Christian Studies Institute
Board to close MCSI from the end of 2008.
The School of Christian Studies, which is an activity of
Robert Menzies College, is continuing to operate and grow.
SOCS has worked in partnership with MCSI to teach subjects
that lead to the Bachelor of Christian Studies and other
awards of the Australian College of Theology, with whom we
are affiliated. From 2009 SOCS will offer the degree on its
own (subject to ACT approval).
SOCS will be expanding its activities to provide for the
needs of students who are part way through their studies. We
will also be seeking to enrol new students from 2009 onwards
into our diploma and degree programs. These additional
activities include:
-
The provision of at least two IN (formerly MCSI/IN)
units each semester;
-
Additional intensive units held mainly in school and
university holidays;
-
An annual conference that can be counted for credit;
-
The trialling of a 3rd semester from November
to February with a month-long break in December-January;
-
The introduction of late afternoon as well as evening
lectures; and
-
An upgrade of our web site
(www.socs.org.au)
to be more informative and to provide for online
enrolment.
SOCS will be exploring whether it can continue, under a
licence arrangement, to provide the online units previously
taught by MCSI. Also, we intend to work towards providing
degree units via distance mode. We will shortly launch our
new diploma distance materials and are we moving towards
wider use of DVD and video streaming for our lectures.
SOCS will actively promote its courses and units through
university and church channels. We would welcome your
assistance in making this information as widely known as
possible among your friends.
We believe that the opening of the new Macquarie University
railway station in 2009, located right opposite Robert
Menzies College, will make SOCS lectures even more
accessible to a greater number of people.
With best wishes
Dr Grant Maple
Director
