Introduction to Health Economic Evaluation

About: This course will introduce attendees to key concepts used in the economic evaluation of health care interventions and programs, and how this information can inform policy decisions.

Attendees will learn:

Differences in the types of economic evaluations that can be conducted, including strengths and weaknesses. What and who is involved in conducting economic evaluations
  2. Measuring and valuing health outcomes: What types of health outcomes are often considered in economic evaluations and what is a quality adjusted life year (QALY). How to value health states and whose preferences should be used
  3. Measuring and valuing resource use: The importance of perspectives, collecting resource use data and how to cost an intervention or program
  4. Decision rules: Presenting, interpreting and using cost-effectiveness information to inform policy decisions, including the implications of uncertainty
  5. Reviewing economic evaluations: Introducing the Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) statement

Collaboration: The Secrets of Success

About: Collaboration — with colleagues, within or across departments, within or across disciplines, inside and outside the university, with local, national and international partners — is highly prized in academia. But how do you ensure your collaborations are valuable and successful? How do you establish them, set ground rules, negotiate roles and outcomes? How do you manage these relationships over time, recognise trouble signs, and repair faltering or unproductive collaborations? Our Panel of senior researchers and ECRs, academic and professional staff, from across the University will share insights into how to choose collaborators, the keys to successful collaboration and ways to navigate tricky situations. There will be time for your questions and requests for advice.
Date: TBA
Time: TBA
Location: TBA
Speakers: Prof Amanda Barnier (Faculty of Human Sciences), Prof Lesley Hughes, (Pro-Vice Chancellor Research Integrity and Development), Prof Catharine Lumby (Faculty of Arts), Dr Celia Harris (Faculty of Human Sciences), Dr Lee Spitler (Faculty of Science and Engineering), Dr Kyle Ratinic (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences)
