About: This session is an introduction to planning for research engagement with external partners (e.g. industry, government and not-for-profit).  It covers research impact as a strategy and policy context, identifying benefits of partnering and the need for diversification of funding sources outside traditional grants.  The session outlines available learning and development resources and guides researchers towards development of a plan to help pursue their own potential partner links. This information session is best provided on request for academic departments, research centres, or small groups and can be customised to suit your needs.

To request a session, please email research.partnerships@mq.edu.au.

Identifying Potential Partner Organisations (Industry Sector Information and Databases)

About: Identifying potential partner organisations requires an understanding of the potential “market” for your research and the particular dynamics of working with non-academic organisations.  Unless you are lucky enough to be approached, making a start can often seem like a daunting challenge.  This session outlines a variety of ways to find potential partner organisations and how to approach and engage with the ones most likely to be collaborative and funding prospects for you and your research.  This information session is best provided on request for academic departments, research centres, or small groups and can be customised to suit your needs.

To request a session, please email research.partnerships@mq.edu.au.

Discussing Research Ideas with Non-Academic Partners

About: For most non-academic partners, research is a means to an end; a way to improve products or services provided by their organisation or the stimulus to innovate to introduce new ones.  This session explores ways to discuss your ideas that helps to surface the motivations and drivers of partners.  It covers ways to generate partner confidence and interest in your research capabilities and current project interests that will increase the likelihood of progressing to the project scoping stage.  This information session is best provided on request for academic departments, research centres, or small groups and can be customised to suit your needs.

To request a session, please email research.partnerships@mq.edu.au.

Developing Pitches and Proposals for Industry, Government and Not-for-Profit Partners

About: Industry, government and not-for-profit partners request or accept proposals for funding in an infinite variety of formats.  This session covers the essentials of developing these proposals from brief capability and concept “pitch” stage documents to complex and highly customised full proposals that are developed in close consultation with a member of the funding partner organisation.  As needed, the session can also cover some of the essentials of tendering.  This information session is best provided on request for academic departments, research centres, or small groups and can be customised to suit your needs.

To request a session, please email research.partnerships@mq.edu.au.

Preparing Tender Submissions

About: Research tenders can form an important part of a research impact program but the tendering process can be demanding, intense and time-consuming. In deciding whether to submit a bid for a research tender, it's vital to understand how you, your team and Macquarie University are placed to compete in the market. This session covers the components of a Request for Tender (RFT) document, how tender submission are assessed, managing multiple partners, costing, developing a bid strategy, bid plan and a bid response (submission).

This information session is best provided on request for academic departments, research centres, or small groups and can be customised to suit your needs.

To request a session, please email research.partnerships@mq.edu.au.

Budget, Intellectual Property and Publication Negotiations for Partner-Funded Projects

About: This session covers the costing and pricing of research projects in accordance with University policy and with an eye to securing partner funding.  It also outlines ways to ensure there is appropriate scope for the publication of findings and results. Examples of different types of budgets and costing and pricing methods, intellectual property arrangements and publication rights terms and conditions are discussed.  This information session is best provided on request for academic departments, research centres, or small groups and can be customised to suit your needs.

To request a session, please email research.partnerships@mq.edu.au.

Research Agreement and Contract Essentials for Partner-Funded Projects

About: Agreements and contracts formalise the rights and obligations between parties to enable them to maximise benefits and mitigate risk.  This session provides an overview of the main types of research agreements and contracts used for partner-funded projects.  It then highlights the important terms and conditions that researchers need to be aware of.  Lastly, it explains the central roles of Research Services, the Office of Commercialisation and Legal Office staff in the contract negotiation, drafting, review and sign-off process.  This information session is best provided on request for academic departments, research centres, or small groups and can be customised to suit your needs.

To request a session, please email research.partnerships@mq.edu.au.

Pathway to Research Impact: How to Plan for and Measure the Impact of your Research

About: Articulating the impact of your research is required when applying for and reporting on grants, and is an increasingly powerful tool when marketing the value of your research to potential partners, the media, the public, your peers, etc.

Research Services have developed an interactive workshop to guide researchers though the steps of planning for, measuring and articulating the impact of their research. The workshop can be customised as required and is best suited to researchers undertaking applied research, and group audiences such as departments or schools.

The workshop provides the latest insights about generating, measuring and assessing research impact in Australia. Participants will walk away with an actionable ‘pathway to impact’ plan for a research project/program of their choice, and an understanding of how best to articulate this impact.

To request a session, please email research.assessments@mq.edu.au.

Sex and Gender in Health Research

Participant in interactive online modules designed to improve the ability of health researchers and peer reviewers to account for sex and gender in i) the analysis of data from human participants, ii) biomedical research involving animals, cells or tissues, and iii) primary data collection with human participants. Developed by the Institute of Gender and Health, Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Participant in the free online training courses.

Research Integrity for Early Career Researchers

About: Research Integrity = just common sense - Right?

As an Early Career Researcher you are likely come head to head with issues concerning authorship, dodgy data, conflicts of interest or the fall-outs from research collaborations breaking down. Knowing what to do to mitigate against these will save you emotional stress, time and money while maintaining your reputation and the credibility of your research.

This session, run by the MQ Research Integrity team, will help you navigate your way through what has been described as the “mundane regular misbehaviours” in research (Martinsen et al 2005, Nature) that can influence the work of a significant number of researchers and have immense potential consequences.

Referencing the Macquarie University Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, this session will explore how to discourage or prohibit these behaviours, as well as how to deal with instances of these behaviours occurring in your research team.

This session will put you on the front foot to recognise and deal with behaviours before they escalate to more serious issues of misconduct. This is essential to every ECRs toolkit!

To request a session, please email: research.integrity@mq.edu.au.

Defence Trade Controls Act – Online Training

About: The DTCA regulates the supply, publication and brokering of controlled materials as listed on the Defence and Strategic Goods List (DSGL). If you are supplying DSGL technology from Australia to another person overseas, or, if you believe that your work or research might be affected by the DTCA, please refer to the DTCA webpage, complete the iLearn course, or email us: defencetradecontrols@mq.edu.au.

Australia’s Foreign Relations Act

The Australia's Foreign Relations Act (AFRA) has been in force for new agreements and arrangements since 10 March 2021. This session is for academics to ask anything about how their work relates to AFRA. The legislation has introduced new reporting requirements for Universities, and academics can trigger these reporting requirements as part of their normal collaboration with foreign academics and institutions. Find out how Macquarie can support you. Email foreign.relations@mq.edu.au or request on myRDC.
