NHMRC Early Career Fellowships

NHMRC Early Career Fellowships

Status Closed

The NHMRC Early Career Fellowships scheme provides four-year Fellowships to early career researchers to assist them in their health and medical research training within Australia or overseas (where applicable).

The specific objectives of the scheme are to:

  • Enable developing health and medical researchers of outstanding ability to undertake advanced training in health and medical research either in Australia or overseas.
  • Provide opportunities for Australian researchers to undertake research that is both of major importance in its field and of benefit to Australian health.
  • Foster career development at the postdoctoral level by encouraging the beneficial experience of a different research environment.

Early Career Fellowship packages are awarded for four years at the Training Support Package Level 1 with an additional $5,000 p.a. for maintenance while based in Australia.

If appropriate, clinical loadings (up to $15,000 p.a. for medical practitioners, up to $7,500 p.a. for dental practitioners) will be paid (rates are based on whether the Fellow is engaged in clinical practice). Pro-rata rates apply for part-time research.

As the packages provided by the NHMRC are below the actual salary costs (including on-costs), Faculties and Departments must meet the salary gap between the award and the Macquarie salary scale.

Faculty Processes

The Faculties have their own approval and review processes for grants under this scheme. They may also have deadlines for submission of draft applications that are earlier than the Research Office deadlines. Please ensure that you contact your Faculty, as early as possible, for information on process and deadlines. Faculty contacts:
