The overarching aim of the MQ Marine Research Centre is to improve research collaboration.  Many climate challenges facing society, which require solutions from science, are firmly linked within marine science. Solutions require new interdisciplinary thinking and tech-savvy approaches, a concatenation of molecules to geoscience, or what is now being termed Geobiology. In this context, the combination of new technology and expertise within the Centre provides a fertile environment for the application of novel approaches to reconstruct the geological and biological past in tandem.

To fulfil its major aim of improving research collaboration, the Centre:

  • Hosts bi-annual workshops, bringing together high profile international and local marine science expertise both in Sydney (at SIMS) and at major international conferences. The collaborative environment these activities foster will be conducive to identifying topical new research directions.
  • Mentors promising Early Career Researchers (ECR’s). Each year the Centre welcomes a group of 3-4 ECR’s to be on the executive committee, who acquire experience in a leadership role and contribute to the Centre’s success.
  • Provides facilities, to centralise interdisciplinary marine research at MQ.
