MQ Marine Research Centre

Macquarie Lighthouse on cliff at Watson's Bay, Sydney

Welcome to the Macquarie University Marine Research Centre!

We were established in July 2015 with the aim of bringing together researchers from across multiple departments to address important marine research issues, and to improve critical mass in the marine area at Macquarie University.

We intend to develop cross-disciplinary research projects, for example in understanding the likely fate of our oceans and marine ecosystems given the unparalleled rate of change towards an unfamiliar warm ocean last experienced more than 50 million years ago.

We will assess the rate and magnitude of change using the Earth’s geological record of past warm oceans, use novel analyses of ancient DNA to assess sustainability and reconstruct changing marine communities over the past 100 years, and link the fate of ecological communities with sedimentological and hydrodynamic processes in dynamic coastal ecosystems.
