Film screening and discussion with Randy  Olson - scientist turned filmmaker

The Faculty of Science; Climate Futures; Department of Media, Music, Communication and Cultural Studies at Macquarie University in conjuction with Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Association Inc present Randy Olson's documentary Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy - about global warming featuring his beloved scientists. The movie was criticised for allowing a number of climate sceptics to speak on camera. After the November 2009 attack on climate science (dubbed “Climategate”), the film, while still being solidly pro-science, enables one to hear the voices of both sides of the climate controversy.

Randy Olson is the writer and director of the feature films "Flock of Dodos: The Evolution-Intelligent Design Circus," (Tribeca '06, Showtime '07); "Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy" (Outfest '08); and author of "Don't Be Such a Scientist: Talking Substance in an Age of Style" (Island Press '09). His work focuses on the challenges of communicating science to the general public, and the attacks on mainstream science in fields such as evolution and climate science. A former marine biologist with a PhD from Harvard University, he achieved tenure at the University of New Hampshire, before changing careers to filmmaking by obtaining an Master of Fine Arts in Cinema from the University of Southern California. He is an adjunct faculty member with the Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies at USC; and his production company, Prairie Starfish Productions is based at Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles.

After the film, Randy will join a panel discussion: Talking substance in an age of style. He will talk about science communication, skeptics and the role of filmmaking and humour in climate change. Moderated by Dr Peter Rogers, Co-Director, Climate Futures at Macquarie, guests inlcude: Dr Rod Lamberts, Deputy Director, Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, ANU; Professor Lesley Hughes, Co-Director, Climate Futures, Macquarie University; and Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, Director of the Centre for Marine Studies, University of Queensland.
