High Performance Computing Facilities

FBE has an arrangement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) whereby staff can access AWS resources such as on-demand elastic computing and virtual machines for their research requirements, and the Faculty will cover all reasonable costs.

How Do I Access It for My Research?

To access this arrangement, staff simply carry out the following simple steps:

  • Create a personal AWS account
  • Submit OneHelp ticket requesting access to the Faculty’s AWS Billing Account, and stating AWS account name
  • Once approved
  • all costs against this account will be charged to the Faculty’s AWS Billing Account

Elastic Web-Scale Computing

Amazon EC2 enables you to increase or decrease capacity within minutes, not hours or days. You can commission one, hundreds or even thousands of server instances simultaneously. Of course, because this is all controlled with web service APIs, your application can automatically scale itself up and down depending on its needs.

Amazon EC2 - Virtual Server Hosting


Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a web service that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It is designed to make web-scale cloud computing easier for developers.

Amazon EC2’s simple web service interface allows you to obtain and configure capacity with minimal friction. It provides you with complete control of your computing resources and lets you run on Amazon’s proven computing environment. Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instances to minutes, allowing you to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as your computing requirements change. Amazon EC2 changes the economics of computing by allowing you to pay only for capacity that you actually use. Amazon EC2 provides developers the tools to build failure resilient applications and isolate themselves from common failure scenarios.


On-Demand Instances

On-Demand Instances let you pay for compute capacity by the hour with no long-term commitments. This frees you from the costs and complexities of planning, purchasing, and maintaining hardware and transforms what are commonly large fixed costs into much smaller variable costs. On-Demand Instances also remove the need to buy “safety net” capacity to handle periodic traffic spikes.

FBE-IT are working with AWS to enhance the services currently provided. Early in 2016, we are planning to make the following available to our researchers:

Create MQ user account

Staff will be able to create AWS accounts using their OneID authentication. This will eliminate the necessity to create up-front personal accounts.

VM Templates

The Faculty is planning to create a menu of pre-configured templates from which staff and full-time HDR students will be able to select resources that best suit their research needs. Templates will be designed to optimise cost/performance, and have common software applications installed.
