Dr Damian Oliver, Business and Economics, Macquarie University
Leading Research Analyst, Workplace Research Centre
For more than ten years, Damian has been conducting research in Australia and overseas on work and employment relations. His particular focus is the transition from education to work and the intersection between education and labour market institutions. Damian has undergraduate qualifications in organisational communication and honours degree in industrial relations. His PhD, awarded in 2007, examined the impact of student employment on Austrialian university graduates' attitudes towards work and trade unions.
Damian has recently returned to the Workplace Research Centre, where he worked 2007-2008. In 2008-2009, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany, where he conducted research into the relationship between the skills formation and industrial relations systems in Germany. Between 2009 and September 2012, he was a Senior Research Officer at the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) in Adelaide. There, he produced a number of reports, including reports examining the impact of economic cycles on trades employment and apprenticeships, the impact of the industrial relations system on apprenticeships, and the labour market outcomes of lower level AQF qualifications.
