About the Seminar
In contrast to the proliferation of studies reporting upon the quality of life of older people in community based setting there is currently a paucity of evidence relating to the health related quality of life of older people living in residential care. This presentation will focus upon the findings from a study to empirically compare the measurement properties of the EQ-5D-5L, DEMQOL-U and DEMQOL-Proxy-U in a population of frail older people living in residential care.
The study sample comprised 541 residents from 17 aged care facilities located across three Australian states. Of these, 143 (26%) self-completed both EQ-5D-5L and DEMQOL-U and the reminder (74%) were completed via proxy (majority family member) assessment.
The findings provide important insights into the self-report versus proxy conundrum which lies at the heart of the measurement and valuation of health related quality of life in this comparatively under-researched population. Implications for further research relating to the measurement and valuation of health related quality of life in frail populations of older people living in residential care, often with significant co-morbidities, cognitive impairment and dementia, will be discussed.

About Professor Julie Ratcliffe
Julie Ratcliffe is the newly appointed Professor of Health Economics in the Institute for Choice, School of Business, University of South Australia.
She also holds an Honorary Professorial position in the School of Health and Related Research at the University of Sheffield. From 2010 to 2016 she was Professor of Health Economics in the School of Medicine at Flinders University.
During the course of her career, Julie has published over 160 papers in peer reviewed journals and she has been a chief investigator on 37 research grants. Her research interests include the measurement and valuation of health and quality of life outcomes for children and older people, and the economic evaluation of interventions across health and aged care sectors.
