Currently much of the exciting scientific research involves combining systems biology molecular and cellular biology with genomics, proteomics as well as engineering and physical sciences. This worldwide phenomenon foreshadows a revolution in the life sciences and biomedical research. Leading universities across the world have already established their focal points for life scientists to interact and collaborate with physical scientists and engineers and actively foster interdisciplinary research teams that operate within them. MQ BioFocus Research Centre is extremely well placed to be part of this emerging trend. As a result of our joint research we expect to create radical new opportunities in medicine for new therapies and diagnostics, provide enhanced commercial opportunities and help transform traditional scientific fields. We are also conscious that this future challenge will need to be met by not just the present but also future generation of research leaders. To this aim we need to enhance the training of our students so that they are well prepared for future leadership in this next scientific revolution.
The convergence of the life, engineering and physical sciences promises to fundamentally change and accelerate the future development of science. There is so much we can achieve together to advance science and the most significant research challenges. There are exciting times ahead!
