Homomorphic Encryption and Order-Preserving Indexing for Querying Encrypted Databases

Data security and privacy are large concerns for users that have outsourced cloud database services. Taking a simple minded approach of encrypting the database does not work effectively, as database operations may require decryption first, then performing the operations and then re-encrypting the result. While the content is in the clear, it is vulnerable. Further, the database operations themselves are slowed by the decrypt/re-encrypt overheads.
In this talk, we introduce a new homomorphic encryption scheme and an order-preserving indexing scheme and its application to encrypted databases. The techniques in this talk can be applied to existing Database Management Systems (DBMSs).
Moreover, these techniques have good usability since they do not need users to predetermine the database characteristics, such as the maximum sum in one database table column. These features make these technologies suitable to manage long-standing and large encrypted databases.
