Five Strange Mathematical Riddles

Speaker: Jacques Patarin
Date, Time: Fri, 16 Jan 2009 15:00

In this talk, I will present five strange mathematical problems. All these problems have a simple formulation and a surprising, or spectacular, solution. Most of them use only elementary mathematics or probability theory.

Example: Riddle Number One (The "Sophie paradox").
1. A family of two children has at least one girl. What is the probability a that this family has two girls?
2. A family of two children has at least one girl called Sophie. What is the probability b that this family has two girls?
Do we have a = b? Why?
