ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQuS)

EQuS seeks to unravel the mysteries of the quantum world and harness them for real-world applications.

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQuS) believes that a better understanding of the quantum world opens new avenues to technology and human progress.

Quantum theory is the most successful theory of the physical world to have ever been devised. Since its conception more than 150 years ago, no one could have imagined supermarket laser scanners or mobile phones.

EQuS is not sure what a future full of engineered quantum systems will look like, but it's on a journey of discovery to find out.

EQuS’ mission

Through visionary research and the engineering of innovative quantum systems, EQuS aims to improve the lives of Australians and people all over the world by making fundamental changes across the sciences, engineering and medicine.

To achieve this, EQuS has established a world-leading research community dedicated to understanding and encouraging the use of quantum technologies.

With the objective to gain control over these new technologies, EQuS seeks to explore the next era of modern technology and educate a new generation of scientists - quantum engineers.

Research

All EQuS projects are grouped under three areas of research:

  • Measurement and control: providing novel control solutions to the practical challenges facing the realisation of quantum-enabled technologies.
  • Sensors and metrology: dramatically improving sensitivity and precision in the areas of biomedical imaging, metrology and sensing.

Synthetic systems and quantum simulation: producing new states of light and matter to enable the simulation of complex interacting quantum systems.

Project leaders

Professor Andrew White directs EQuS alongside 18 chief investigators, 40 researchers and even more students. Node Manager Dr Thomas Volz heads up a team of four chief investigators from Macquarie University, including: Professor Jason Twamley, Associate Professor Gavin Brennen and Associate Professor Alexei Gilchrist.
