Pre-2015 Postgraduate Coursework Unit Descriptions and Outlines

ALL units are available to Macquarie University postgraduate students who enrolled prior to 2015, and Non-Award students.

MUSEC currently offers the following postgraduate coursework units, as detailed below. All units are offered as Single Unit (Non Award) through the Centre for Open Education. All units are offered as an elective within other University/ Faculty programs. 

SPED801: Key Research Issues and Methods in Special Education

  • This unit examines the key principles and practices of research generally, and as it relates to Special Education. Students will gain both an understanding of a range of research methodologies and an ability to write academically and critically evaluate literature and research at an introductory level.
  • Prerequisite: PASS or above in all previously completed SPED units (if any) or Permission of the Head of Centre (PHC).
  • Availability: external (i.e., distance). Full-time and part-time. All include online delivery.

SPED802: Effective Instruction for Students with Special Education Needs

  • This unit provides an overview of instructional technology in Special Education. It focuses on empirically verified generic instructional methods and approaches that have broad application and may be seen to provide the foundation for contemporary Special Education.
  • Prerequisite: PASS or above in all previously completed SPED units (if any) or Permission of the Head of Centre (PHC).
  • Availability: external (i.e., distance). Full-time and part-time. All include online delivery.

SPED803: Curriculum and Instruction for Individuals with High Support Needs

  • This unit focuses on students with high support needs and examines curriculum issues and instructional technologies. It provides a practical introduction and guide to developing relevant and meaningful educational programs for students with high support needs.
  • Prerequisites: PASS or above in all previously completed SPED units or Permission of the Head of Centre (PHC).
  • Corequisite: SPED802.
  • Availability: external (i.e., distance). Full-time and part-time. All include online delivery.

SPED804: Effective Literacy Instruction FINAL OFFERING SEMESTER 2, 2016

  • This unit is designed to provide students with the information and skills necessary to guide their instruction of students at risk of failure in the area of literacy. SPED804 focuses on current research-based theoretical, conceptual and pedagogical components of literacy.
  • Prerequisites: PASS or above in all previously completed SPED units or Permission of the Head of Centre (PHC).
  • Corequisite: SPED802.
  • Availability: external (i.e., distance). Full-time and part-time. All include online delivery.

SPED805: Effective Numeracy Instruction  FINAL OFFERING SEMESTER 1, 2016

  • This unit is designed to provide students with the information and skills necessary to guide their instruction of students at risk of failure in the area of numeracy. SPED805 focuses on current research-based theoretical, conceptual and pedagogical components of numeracy.
  • Prerequisites: PASS or above in all previously completed SPED units or Permission of the Head of Centre (PHC).
  • Corequisite: SPED802.

SPED806: Behaviour Problems and Classroom Management

  • This unit provides a comprehensive introduction to the management of students with significant communication problems and/or challenging behaviour, as well as students who are generally described as behaviour disordered. This unit focuses upon identification and assessment issues, with a strong practical emphasis on program development and intervention.
  • Prerequisites: PASS or above in all previously completed SPED units or Permission of the Head of Centre (PHC).
  • Corequisite: SPED802.
  • Availability: external (i.e., distance). Full-time and part-time. All include online delivery.

SPED807: Communication for Individuals with High Support Needs

  • This unit addresses communication in persons with high support needs. Specifically considered are theoretical and conceptual issues related to communication, communication options, assessment approaches and intervention strategies.
  • Prerequisites: PASS or above in all previously completed SPED units or Permission of the Head of Centre (PHC).
  • Corequisite: SPED802.
  • Availability: external (i.e., distance). Full-time and part-time. All include online delivery.

SPED810: Current Issues In Special Education

  • This unit examines current issues in special education research and practice. Students will gain an understanding of current research in special education, particularly research carried out at Macquarie University and other Australian organizations. Students will be encouraged to critically consider the application of research to classroom practice, program design and policy in contemporary special education.
  • Prerequisites: PASS or above in all previously completed SPED units or Permission of the Head of Centre (PHC).
  • Corequisite: SPED802.
  • Availability: external (i.e., distance). Full-time and part-time. All include online delivery.

Masters Project Units

SPED901: Special Education Project Stage 1

  • In consultation with a MUSEC academic staff member, students will undertake a major review of the research literature on a selected topic of interest and write an academic review article in a form suitable for submission to a refereed journal.
  • Prerequisite: CREDIT or above in at least 6 units in the range SPED801-810 or Permission of the Head of Centre (PHC).
  • Availability: external (i.e., distance).
  • Note: Students must negotiate a supervisor before enrolling in this unit.

SPED902: Special Education Project Stage 2

  • Following consultation with the academic supervisor for SPED901, students will implement a small scale research project. Projects will normally involve an intervention, but surveys, policy analysis and program evaluation may also be appropriate. This stage will be an extension to SPED901, using as the foundation for the project the information arising from the literature review.
  • Prerequisite: CREDIT or above in at least 6 units in the range SPED801-810 or Permission of the Head of Centre (PHC).

  • Note: Students must negotiate a supervisor before enrolling in this unit.
