Macquarie University Centre for Language Sciences

Pushing the boundaries of language sciences research to improve how we communicate.

The Centre for Language Sciences (CLaS) researches theoretical, experimental and computational issues in:

  • child language
  • psycholinguistics
  • computational linguistics
  • lexicography
  • audiology
  • speech science

Our interdisciplinary research centre brings together language science researchers from three faculties: Science and Engineering, Human Sciences and Arts.

This allows us to pursue a wide range of projects: from understanding bilingual preschoolers’ level of grammatical knowledge to developing ways in which computers can understand human language better.

World-class research facilities

We have access to the world’s first child whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) system – which is also currently the only child MEG facility in the Southern Hemisphere.

Other facilities that CLaS and linguistics PhD students can access are:

  • child language acquisition laboratory
  • child phonology laboratory
  • eye tracking labs
  • speech laboratories (speech movement/kinematics, electropalatography, ultrasound, oral and nasal airflow)
  • sound-treated recording studios
