Project name

Delivering safe and effective care for children in hospital with eHealth systems

Project description

The Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research, one of the core research centres within AIHI, was recently awarded an NHMRC Partnership Grant on medication safety and eHealth systems in paediatric hospitals. The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network plans to adopt new eHealth systems to significantly reduce patient risk and improve outcomes for patients. Two major electronic health record components will be implemented: 1) an electronic medication management system (eMM) for all patients and 2) an electronic medical record for oncology patients (eMR). This is a multi-method study which will run over five years. A core element is a stepped wedge cluster randomised controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of the eMMs to reduce errors and patient harm.

Six possible research topics are available for post graduate research students depending upon their backgrounds and experience:

  1. An evaluation of computerised decision support for prescribers in the eMMS
  2. Economic evaluation of the eMMS implementation
  3. Development and application of methods for the measurement of adverse drug events and harm in paediatric patients
  4. Development and application of statistical analysis methods for stepped wedge cluster randomised controlled trials
  5. Development and application of methods to assess the effects of ehealth systems on clinical workflow and processes.
  6. Evaluation of eMMS training models

This research will make significant contributions nationally and internationally in delivering critical new evidence which will translate into better and safer eHealth system design and use to support clinical care for children.
