The ARC Science of Learning Research Centre investigates ways to improve how students are educated across Australia.

An effective education system opens up opportunities for citizens, providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to their community and economy.

Examining scientific learning

The ARC Science of Learning Research Centre (SLRC) was established in 2013 to improve the teaching methods and overall education system in Australia. Our research combines the education discipline with neuroscience, cognitive psychology and other fields.

According to research conducted by OECD's Better Life, although Australia has the fourth highest average number of years spent in education, we rank eleventh in terms of student skills; it’s apparent time spent in education is not being used efficiently.

The SLRC aims to ensure Australia’s proud history as an enlightened nation continues into the future by:

  • better understanding the learning process
  • measuring levels of learning
  • developing tools and strategies to promote learning.

This ARC has created two state-of-the-art classrooms: one in Queensland, the other in Victoria. These classrooms have been designed to measure brain activity, track eye movement, physiological responses and more while individuals engage in learning. The research conducted at Macquarie University is undertaking in our Learning Research Laboratory which is equipped with digital learning settings and psychophysiological measurement devices.  The more we understand about a student’s reactions to lessons and stimuli, the more we can develop courses that truly engage.
