Project Description

The project aims to develop technology for noninvasive measurement of fluid pressure in the brain. Engineering approaches will aim to characterise relationships between arterial and intracranial pressure from experimental data, computational models and signal processing of noninvasive blood pressure in the aorta, pressure in the eye and blood flow in brain and retinal vessels. Findings are expected to produce novel engineering advances in development of techniques and devices for intracranial pressure measurement, a procedure currently limited to high-risk invasive methods. This technology is anticipated to enable measurement of intracranial pressure in non-acute screening procedures for improved assessment of brain function.

The candidate will be expected to have a solid grounding in basic circulatory physiology and experience in signal processing. The project will involve laboratory experiments in rats to measure arterial and intracranial pressure with fluid interventions to alter cerebral tissue compliance. System identification techniques will be applied to estimate models parameters. Data will also be collected from human subjects with indwelling intracranial catheters together with transcranial blood flow measurements. There will be substantial interaction with the collaborative industrial partner to implement the existing technology of obtaining the central aortic pressure waveform from the peripheral arterial pulse and applying this to obtain a continuous calibrated intracranial pressure waveform.

This scholarship is available to eligible candidates to undertake either:

  • Research Training Pathway (RTP) MRes Year 2 followed by a possible Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) for a 3 year PhD. This is referred to as an MRes/PhD ‘bundle offer’. MRES Year 2, Semester 2 commencement is subject to further approval;


  • Direct entry into a 3 year PhD program.

The value and tenure of the scholarship/s is/are:

  • The MRES Year 2 full-time stipend rate is $26 288 per annum (2016 rate) tax exempt
  • The MQRES full-time stipend rate is $26,288 per annum (in 2016 tax exempt, for up to 3 years (indexed annually)

For international candidates, the scholarship includes Macquarie University tuition fees for up to three years/four years

Applicants will need to Apply for a research degree and scholarship at Macquarie Universityand arrange for two academic referee reports to be submitted to the Higher Degree Research Office.
