Project Description

The Centre for Health Informatics (CHI) is the longest-running health informatics research centre in Australia. The Centre's work is internationally recognised for its groundbreaking contributions in the role of digital technology to support health service innovation.

We are seeking a bright and enthusiastic candidate to join the Consumer Informatics team to undertake PhD research under the supervision of Dr Annie Lau.  Our research program focuses on those with the highest stake in our healthcare system, and investigates the impact, design, and science of digital technology on consumers, patients and their carers.

The exact PhD topic will be determined taking into account the interests, experience and prior training of the successful candidate.  Possible topics include, but are not limited to: investigating the role of Artificial Intelligence for patients and consumers, understanding “patient work”, designing and evaluating digital tools for patients (e.g. mobile apps), introducing digital tools for patients in various healthcare situations.

The scholarship would suit an applicant with training in Computer Science, Engineering, Human Factors, Psychology, Design methods, Data Science, or a Health-related field.  It would also suit applicants who enjoy working with innovative technologies, and a desire to work with patients, consumers and clinicians.

This scholarship is available to eligible candidates to undertake direct entry into a 3 year PhD program.

The value and tenure of the scholarship is:

  • The iMQRTP full-time stipend rate is $26,682 per annum (in 2017 tax exempt, for up to 3 years, indexed annually)

The scholarship is comprised of a Tuition Fee Offset and a Living Allowance Stipend.

To be eligible, candidates must commence their candidature before 15 December 2017.

Applicants will need to complete a HDR Candidature and Scholarship Application Form and arrange for two academic referee reports to be submitted to the Higher Degree Research Office. The application form and further information can be found on the Application page.   

To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants are expected to have a record of excellent academic performance and preferably, additional relevant research experience and/or peer-reviewed research activity, awards and/or prizes in line with the University’s scholarship rating guidelines.
