Research highlights

Our research directly affects patient outcomes across a range of medical conditions and interventions.

Treating MND – Macquarie Neurology and Macquarie’s Motor Neuron Disease (MND) Service combines academic and clinical services with Australia's largest concentration of MND researchers, providing patients with bespoke care. This supports a translational research platform that has made important discoveries of genetic origins of familial MND, which has enabled MND pre-implantation in vitro fertilisation (IVF) services to ensure babies are free of MND in Australia. Our genetic discoveries have also been incorporated into standard practice diagnostic genetic testing of MND patients that are used worldwide.

A simple blood test could soon diagnose cancer – Professor Helen Rizos leads team using liquid biopsies to test patients' responses to cancer treatments and to predict survival outcomes. Read more about this research.

Real-world innovation – Macquarie University launched Celosia Therapeutics to develop effective treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. Read more about this research.
