Research in psychology and cognitive sciences is conducted mainly within the Department of Psychology and the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science (MACCS), however collaborations with researchers in education; early childhood; linguistics; brain, behaviour and evolution; statistics; computing; sociology; philosophy and business are numerous.
MACCS, established as an ARC Special Research Centre in 2000, has now evolved into the ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and Its Disorders. The Centre for Emotional Health is leading the world in understanding and treating anxiety, depression and related mental health problems. The Centre for the Integrative Study of Animal Behaviour hosts researchers with international reputations in the field of comparative cognition.
World-class laboratories
Macquarie provides outstanding infrastructure including laboratories for: action and cognition; animal studies; brain research; driving simulation; event-related potentials; eye tracking; fixation related potentials; hypnosis; language acquisition; memory; music, sound and performance (including motion capture); and olfaction.
World-first in collaboration with Japan
High-profile collaborations include the Kanazawa Institute of Technology and Yokogawa Electric Corporation in Japan, which led to the installation at Macquarie of the world's first child MEG machine.
World-leading researchers
Macquarie University's success in this area is due also to the contributions of many other outstanding researchers who play important roles in the developmental disorders of language and literacy network, a network of researchers and clinicians investigating and treating language disorders.
Macquarie is home to high-profile researchers, including internationally renowned cognitive scientist Professor Max Coltheart, linguist Professor Stephen Crain, and clinical psychologist Professor Ron Rapee.

Awards include a CSIRO Eureka Prize for Leadership in Science, and a Commonwealth Centenary Medal for Professor Max Coltheart; and early career awards from the Australian Psychological Society and the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, as well as a NSW Tall Poppy Award for Associate Professor Jennie Hudson.
