The Department of Ancient History at Macquarie University, in collaboration with the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies, offers a Master of Arts coursework unit in Ancient Numismatics. The course is presented by Dr Kenneth Sheedy, director of ACANS. It is open to students who have completed their undergraduate degree in history or in a related discipline. It is not available externally.
This course aims to introduce students to the techniques of numismatic research, and to the vast field of numismatic evidence for the study of the ancient world. The lectures are designed with an emphasis on the study of the coins held in the collection of the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies. There are two main course components:
A. the theory and methodology of numismatics; B. the coinages of Mediterranean societies.
