Review of Student Services
The role of Student Services within universities is to provide an integrated student support and development service which is focused on students' academic and personal needs throughout their academic career. In many universities such service units provide expert advice to faculties and other areas of the University on the management of students at risk, critical incidents, and other circumstances that impact on student welfare. Often they are also involved in the provision of orientation and transition programs. Student Service agencies also contribute to a university meeting statutory obligations under State and Commonwealth legislation. At Macquarie University these roles and activities are provided through Student Services and the elements that comprise that area:
Terms of Reference
To analyse Macquarie's current practice in this area and compare this to 'good practice' models in Australia and overseas
To establish a set of principles to guide the development and review of a 'student support function' for Macquarie University that focuses on supporting students throughout the entire period of their engagement with the University from pre-admission to post-graduation
To define the boundaries of a 'student support function' (what functions should be included/excluded in such a function) and the nature of the relationship(s) that it should have to other functions (e.g., staff development, library, IT services, academic and administrative services) within the University
To recommend arrangements for the governance and management of the 'student support function' at Macquarie
To articulate a strategy and structure for the 'student support function' based upon these principles
To develop an implementation and resourcing plan to realise this strategy and structure
