Purpose
This Guideline provides information to assist higher degree research (HDR) candidates in the preparation and submission of a thesis that has been recommended by the Higher Degree Research Committee (HDRC) for re-examination.

Invitation to Examiners to Re-Examine
In the case of a thesis re-submitted for examination, an invitation is sent to all initial examiners who have indicated their willingness to re-examine the thesis. When a thesis is first examined, examiners are requested to indicate their interest in participating in a re-examination.
Appointment of Examiners
A new examiner can be approached to conduct a thesis re-examination due to the unavailability of a previous examiner. Not all initial examiners may wish to conduct a re-examination which may require the appointment of new examiners.
An examiner who previously passed the initial thesis, subject to modification, may be approached to re-examine the thesis. This would happen in instances where the University had previously determined that the thesis required additional work requiring further enrolment. When making a determination on the thesis outcome, the University takes into account all examiner reports plus any other relevant information.
Re-Examination Process
Examiners who have previously examined a thesis may wish to check if their particular recommendations are included in the revised thesis, as part of the re-examination process. Access to the unrevised thesis is to be made available to the re-examiner on request. Requests to access the original thesis should be sent to hdrexam@vc.mq.edu.au
When a thesis is re-submitted for examination, a detailed report is compiled by the candidate outlining the exact changes made to the thesis during the period of re-enrolment and submitted to HDRC. The revised thesis, detailed report and recommendation form are sent to the examiners.
Approval to submit a revised thesis for re-examination must first be sought from the Faculty Associate Dean HDR.
Re-Examination
The purpose of the thesis re-examination is to determine whether or not the revised thesis now meets the requirements of the degree as outlined in the documentation forwarded to Examiners. It is not expected that examiners of the re-submitted thesis will recommend that new areas of research investigation should be undertaken by the candidate for the finalisation of the thesis.
