Art Gallery of New South Wales and Macquarie University join forces to increase community engagement in the arts

The Art Gallery of NSW and Macquarie University are delighted to announce an exciting partnership that combines their significant arts and education resources to increase engagement in the arts across a diverse cross-section of the community.

The three-year collaboration with Macquarie University, one of AGNSW’s most significant partnerships in scale and scope, will extend the Gallery’s engagement with a number of its key audiences including the next generation of young adults who will be tomorrow’s cultural leaders and arts professionals.

The partnership will provide opportunities for teenagers and undergraduate students, in the formative years of their careers, to be supported by gallery and university professionals to develop programs, projects and initiatives for other young adults across both the university and gallery environments.

Art Gallery of New South Wales director Dr Michael Brand said the Gallery was thrilled to be partnering with Macquarie University as the art museum reimagines its future through its expansion known as the Sydney Modern Project.

“The Gallery’s vision to create new and inspiring places and experiences that enrich the lives of individuals as well as whole communities is shared by Macquarie University,” Brand said.

“Our partnership has a focus on developing programs created and delivered by young people, so as institutions we’ll be opening up to new ideas, new audiences and new ways of seeing which is critical to the success of arts-engaged communities in the future,” Brand added.

Professor David Wilkinson, Macquarie University Deputy Vice Chancellor Corporate Engagement and Advancement said Macquarie University has a long-standing commitment to the arts.

“Our sponsorship of the Art Gallery of New South Wales provides a unique opportunity to further our commitment to the arts, ensuring both students and the local community gain valuable access to support and development opportunities within the gallery and university.

“The significant focus on learning and development for students, an integral component of this sponsorship, is an area that we are very passionate about and proud to support,” Professor Wilkinson said.

The three-year partnership also sees Macquarie University supporting AGNSW’s exhibition program commencing with O’Keeffe, Preston, Cossington Smith: Making modernism showing until 2 October 2017 and the Gallery’s flagship free public program, Art After Hours every Wednesday evening from 5pm-10pm.

As a venue partner for AGNSW, Macquarie University will also support the annual ARTEXPRESS exhibition, one of the most dynamic and popular at the Gallery highlighting the works of HSC Visual Arts students.
