Film students impress employers with scope of work

On Monday 30 November the Department of Media, Music, Communication and Cultural Studies hosted their annual Screen Focus Awards, which celebrates and showcases outstanding works made by students enrolled in screen production units.

The event, now in its 21st year was attended by over 250 people including Faculty of Arts Executive Dean, Professor Martina Mӧllering and industry representative Peter Slee, Creative Director for Woody.tv who was impressed by the calibre of work of the Macquarie film students and offered several internships on the night.

The Department of Media, Music, Communication and Cultural Studies is unique in offering students broad-based degrees with equal emphasis on the theory and practice of a number of creative practices, including screen. The Department is housed in the former AFTRS building, and has invested heavily in a teaching cohort of award-winning academics and industry-standard facilities including professional screen, radio and dance studios, digital workstations for all production areas, a specially equipped screening theatre, and the latest in digital production and editing tools.

The screening showcased fifteen student films comprising of documentaries, dramas and experimental films. All films made by second and third year screen students were considered.

Awards were given for outstanding achievement in:

  • Directing – The 5 to 9: Kristy Clinton

  • Producing – Carved: Emma Jones/Cameron Cortazzo

  • Cinematography (joint winners) – Dysphoria: Riley Maher and I Told You So: Ryan Chiu

  • Production design – Dysphoria: Lloyd Cuffe

  • Editing (joint winners) – I Told You So: Ryan Chiu and Carved: Denise Leung

  • Sound design – Dysphoria: Ben Schmidt


The award for ‘Best Film’ is voted for by the audience on the evening and went to Dwindlings, a heart-warming film about the bond between brothers. The runners-up went to Intern.gif, a film made by students from the second year unit, Screen Production 1 – their first ever screen unit.

This year the prize for the Creative Achievement Award in Directing was sponsored by See-Saw films to the tune of $1000.

See Saw is an Academy Award-winning British and Australian company, who have produced such films as The King’s Speech, Mr Holmes and Tracks. Simone Nicholson, from See-Saw Films was in attendance to present the award to winner, Kristy Clinton, who directed the poetic documentary, The 5 to 9 and also edited the dance film, I See You.
