Law students ace Session 2 competitions

It has been a successful Session 2 for Macquarie Law School students, gaining several achievements in various competitions including the Australian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) Client Interview Competition where students Nicola Amys and Stephanie Fehon emerged as Australian Champions.

Nicola and Stephanie will represent Macquarie University and Australia at the 2016 International Client Consultation Competition (ICCC) which will be held in University of Windsor, Canada on April 2016. McCabes Lawyers will be providing support to the Macquarie delegates. Aside from this, McCabes Lawyers, a long-standing supporter of Macquarie Law School, also sponsors one of Macquarie Law School’s annual student prizes and exclusively advertises its graduate recruitment program to Macquarie students.

Other students who were successful in the ALSA competitions were:

  • Samuel Voller, Dylan Heffernan, and Laura Webster – quarter finalists in the Championship Moot

  • Hannah Robinson – quarter finalist in the Witness Examination competition

  • Sevanne McGarity and Danielle Kroon – represented Macquarie University in the Negotiation competition

  • Timothy Grellman, Valiant Warzecha, Corinne O’Sullivan, and Benjamin Roe – represented Macquarie University Law Society (MULS) at ALSA as general delegates and judges

Margaret Cunneen Witness Examination


Macquarie student Hannah Robinson beat her competitor from University of Technology Sydney, leading to Macquarie’s second win in a row in this prestigious competition. The competition had an esteemed bench comprising of Crown Prosecutor Margaret Cunneen SC, Greg James SC (former Justice of the NSW Supreme Court), and Graham Turnbull SC (leading barrister specialising in criminal law).

2015 Sir Anthony Mason Constitutional Law Essay Prize


Jeremy Grunfeld and Gabrielle Sheehan were awarded 3rd prize for their essays on constitutional law. Sir Anthony Mason AC KBE QC selected the winners and presented the awards to the finalists.

Law students also succeeded in the following competitions organised by MULS:

Paper Presentation Competition and Negotiations Competition – sponsored by Allens


Brendan Lord, Hannah Robinson, and Valiant Warzecha won the Paper Presentation Preliminary Round, while Anshul Potnis, Katherine Lam, Jake Giordano, and Natalie Antoon topped the Negotiations competition semis. Grand Finals for the Paper Presentation competition and the Negotiations competition will be held at the offices of Allens on 30 November and 3 December respectively.

Witness Examination Competition – sponsored by Gadens


Twenty students participated in this competition where Sean Kerr and Dhanya Mani won the Semi-Final round. They will compete in the Grand Final which will be held at the offices of Gadens on 1 December.

Junior Client Interview competition – sponsored by Herbert Smith Freehills


Nicholas Lavanda, Georgia Mills, Priyesheta Chand, and Shivam Shingh will progress to the Junior Client Interview grand finals on 7 December in Herbert Smith Freehills offices.
