Macquarie University has again moved up in one of the world’s major international ranking systems.

According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2014, released on Friday, Macquarie moved up around 26 places to 239th globally.

Published annually since 2003, the ARWU is a widely-referenced and influential ranking of the world’s research universities. It ranks more than 1000 universities, with the top 500 published at http://www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU2014.html

It is compiled using indicators including:

• number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
• number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific
• number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science
• number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index
• per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution.

In May, the UK’s Times Higher Education ranked Macquarie University equal 34th in the world in its Top 100 Universities Under 50 rankings, while in February the 2014 QS World University Rankings by Subject ranked Macquarie among the top 50 institutions in the world when it comes to Linguistics (43rd), Psychology (48th) and Earth and Marine Sciences (48th).

In the Australian Government’s most recent Excellence in Research for Australia analysis, 85% of Macquarie research was rated at or above world standard, and three disciplines – Earth Sciences, Physical Sciences and Environmental Sciences – received the maximum 5/5 rating.
