Macquarie University partnered this month in launching Bridge to Employment (BTE), an initiative to inspire young people to stay in school, excel academically and elevate their career aspirations.

The Bridge to Employment Program (BTE) was established by Johnson & Johnson in 1992. Janssen Australia, the pharamaceutical company of Johnson & Johnson, has joined with 2realise, a charity supporting young people, to start the first Australian site of this international program.

As part of the Australian program, 47 student participants have been selected from Marsden High School, West Ryde. Through a focus on academic enrichment, career readiness and personal development these students will be exposed to the various careers and opportunities within the health industry.

As education partners, Macquarie University and the Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE will provide essential resources to help aid the academic progression of students in the BTE program, including study skills preparation and resilience training.

“This program will give Marsden High students some tremendous opportunities to explore their future career paths,” says Professor David Wilkinson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Corporate Engagement and Advancement.

“Staff and students from across the University are pitching in to help them with this, with our 2014 activites including interactive science shows, study skills and mentoring from our PACE (Professional and Community Engagement) students. The BTE students will even have special access behind the scenes of Macquarie University Hospital, to see different health career paths in action.”

2realise, which currently holds the federally funded School Community Business Partnership Broker program is also engaging with University’s broader PACE program.

The passion and commitment of the partners involved in BTE aims to ensure the sustainability of the partnership beyond the current three year funding period.
