As part of Macquarie’s annual Learning and Teaching week, undergraduate researchers from across Australasia will come together on campus this Thursday and Friday, 19-20 September, for the second Australasian Conference of Undergraduate Research.

“Last year’s inaugural conference was extremely successful,” reports project leader Professor Angela Brew. “We had great feedback not only from the undergraduate researchers but from experienced academics who came along to the presentations and spoken papers.”

Designed to help undergraduates become part of and engage with the research community, the event is an ideal way for the next generation of scholars to experience an academic conference.

The two-day conference includes poster presentations and spoken papers from undergraduate students, Master of Research students and graduated 2012 Honours students from across Australasia.

Students will present on topics such as:

  • Big History: Opening the Gateway to Interdisciplinary Learning ,
    Saba Vayani-Lai, Macquarie University

  • International medical students, where to now?
Claudia von Peltz, University of Western Australia

  • Searching for risk factors in low back pain: insights from a new twin case-control study Alex Griffin, University of Sydney

  • and more, from right across the spectrum of disciplines and real-world applications

The best full papers submitted by undergraduates will be published in a Special Issue of MQ Matrix (Macquarie University's peer reviewed undergraduate research journal). These will also be eligible to win the prize for the best presentation at the conference.

“We’ve had some pretty incredible sponsors come in for prizes this year as well,” says Professor Brew. “It can really pay off to participate in conferences like this, and we’re keen to see it grow into an even bigger event for 2014.”

Prizes at ACUR 2013 include:

  • $1000 Prize for the Best Presentation and Paper at the Australasian Conference of Undergraduate Research 2013 (open to UG and MRes (1st year) students only)

  • $1000 Prize for the Best Presentation and Paper on Community-Engaged Research (open to ALL students)

  • Four $500 Travel Scholarships for students who have engaged in online education: rural and remote; indigenous; female; and teacher/educator (open to undergraduate and Master of Research (1st year) students only)
