June 2009
Bulk excavation has now been completed with only isolated detail excavation to go. Level 0 (ASRS) slab on ground has now been poured, with level 1 slab on ground 60% complete. Formwork to the level 2 slab is approximately 40% complete. Services infrastructure works have authority approval and are now underway.
15 May 2009 - Macquarie Drive - Closure of Northern Lane for Construction Zone
On Monday 18 May 2009 the contractor for the new Library project will implement the site Construction Zone in the northern lane of Macquarie Drive adjacent to the site. This Construction Zone will remain in use during the remainder of the project however, if use is not required at any particular time the lane will be opened for general traffic use.
Please refer to the attached Traffic Management Plan diagram.
May 2009
AW Edwards Pty Ltd has completed the bulk and detailed excavation and associated perimeter retaining walls and shoring. With the completion of the earthworks, subsoil drainage works are underway. Preparatory works for the placement of the Level 1 slab will follow.
AW Edwards has implemented the construction zone along Macquarie Drive and installed two electric tower cranes on site.
April 2009
The final Design and Construct contract for the Project was executed on 11 March 2009.
Works on site have commenced with the bulk excavation and shoring for the project currently underway. These works have significantly progressed such that the works are currently approximately 70% complete. Contiguous piling commenced mid March with approximately one third completed to date and it is expected that the majority of excavation works will be completed by mid May 2009.
Towards the completion of the earthworks two electric tower cranes will be erected on the site, these cranes have been selected because they provide the best environmental solution both in terms of fuel type and minimised operational noise levels. Additionally they utilise the latest technology to ensure that load movement is accurately controlled so at no time will any material be lifted above adjacent buildings.
Update 10 February, 2009 - Building works near C3A, C3B and W3A
The commencement of earth works for the new library site is affecting the working conditions for staff in C3A, C3B and W3A. The University is putting the following strategies in place to help reduce any inconvenience caused and mitigate any safety concerns:
Access
What's happening now:
- People with disabilities affected by the changes are asked to contact Michael Carley on ext 9725 so arrangements can be made to assist them
- Crossing attendants will be used during the first few weeks of term for busy periods of the day
- Installation of traffic mirrors at crossing parking at C2 and E1 on Macquarie Drive
- Reviewing signage around work zones to make them clearer
- Fencing installation to prevent students, staff and visitors crossing Macquarie Drive, except at designated crossing points

Got a story to share?
If These Walls Could Talk.... Tell us your Library story!
Did you know that a murder suspect was once holed up inside the Library? Or that some enterprising students once set up an impromptu gourmet kitchen in one of the study rooms? Or that over the years stack has proved a popular place for amorous couples to rendezvous?
By some estimates, over 200,000 individual students and staff have used our current Library over its 40 year life. There are plenty of stories to tell...
Got one of your own?

Ballad of a Thin Man: We're gathering your library stories
"You've been with the professors
And they've all liked your looks
With great lawyers you have
Discussed lepers and crooks
You've been through all of
F. Scott Fitzgerald's books
You're very well read
It's well known
Because something is happening here
But you don't know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?"
