Senior Mysorean military commander: vakil and sirdar.
Also accompanied Tipu's hostage sons to Madras in 1793. After the 1799 defeat he became a pensioner of the British receiving 3000 star pagodas per annum. [see also: Ghulam 'Ali Khan].

GHULAM 'ALI KHAN (1758-1863)
Senior Mysorean military commander: vakil and sirdar.
Chief vakil of the embassy sent by Tipu to his Ottoman counterpart, Sultan Abdul Hamid I in Constantinople in the period 1786-1790. He sailed from Tadri (on the Malabar Coast) to Musqat and Basra, then overland to Baghdad and Constantinople, returning home via Alexandria and Jeddah to Calicut; in 1792 he accompanied Tipu's hostage sons, Abdul Khaliq and Maizzuddin, to Madras. After the 1799 defeat Ghulam 'Ali Khan became a pensioner of the British, and allegedly received 3000 star pagodas per annum [see also: 'Ali Reza Khan]; appointed as District Munsif of Krishnagiri in 1816; retired in 1854; died at Krishnagiri in 1863 at the age of 105; buried on the southern side of Shahi Masjid Fort, Krishnagiri.

KUMMER-U-DEEN (also CUMMER-U-DEEN or KAMMAR-UD-DIN)

Had been sent by Tipu towards Coveraporam, with four thousand Mysore cavalry, to impede the march of General Floyd who was escorting the relief supply convoys to Seringapatam (after 19 April). As a consequence Kummer-U-Deen was absent when the final assault took place. He sent a message to General Harris on 7 May indicating his preparedness to surrender. By 14 May Kummer-U-Deen and all the principal surviving Commanders had surrendered, with their troops, to the British.

MIR NADIM
Commandant of the fort of Seringapatam: Qul'adar. Alleged to have refused to open a gate when ordered to do so by Tipu during the fighting. Tipu was subsequently wounded and killed as he attempted to pass through another inner gate leading to the interior of the fort. Mir Nadim subsequently received the British officers at the palace when they entered the fort in search of Tipu.

MIR SADIQ (d.1799)
Tipu's Chief Minister: Diwan.
Alleged to have betrayed Tipu to the British - was killed by Mysorean troops immediately following the defeat (as he attempted to go over to the British). On the mural painting depicting the battle of Pollilur on the outer wall of the Daria Daulat at Seringapatam the face of Mir Sadiq has been erased, apparently in consequence of his treachery.

MUHAMMAD REZA (d.1799)
Senior Mysorean military commander: sirdar.
Also known as the 'Benki Nawab', 'Binky Nabob' or the 'Fire Nawab'. Killed at the battle of Sedaseer [Siddheshwara] on 5 March 1799. The word 'Benki' in Kanarese literally means 'fire', signifying in this case a soldier who brought fire and destruction to his enemies.

QAMARUDDIN KHAN [also CUMMER U DEEN or MEER CUMMER U DEEN KHAN]
Senior Mysorean military commander: sirdar.
Cousin of Tipu.
His relationship with the British deteriorated in the 12 months after the fall of Seringapatam. Was given the jagir of Gurramkonda by the Nizam of Hyderabad. By 1800 he had allegedly died from 'a fatal disease too terrible to be described.' [Kirmani]

RAJI KHAN [also RAJAH CAWN] (d.1799)
Tipu's personal attendant and 'favourite slave': chela and 'chief governor' of all the domestic servants.
Raji Khan was wounded in the fighting near the Water Gate when Tipu was killed on 4 May. He was found alive amongst the dense mass of bodies underneath Tipu's palankeen. Raji Khan indicated to the British the location of Tipu's body.

SAIYID GHUFAIR (also SAYYID GAFFUR or SYED GOFFAR) (d.1799)
Senior Mysorean military commander: sirdar.
Originally in the service of the Nawab of Arcot, then employed by the East India company as a commander of the revenue corps. Captured by Tipu in 1782. Agreed to serve in Tipu's army.
Killed at the beginning of the assault on 4 May 1799.

SAIYID SAHEB (Mir Mu'inuddin) (c.1740-1799)
Senior Mysorean military commander: sirdar.
Cousin of Tipu, and also father-in-law through Tipu's 1796 marriage to his daughter.
Killed at the beginning of the assault on 4 May 1799.
