Why Engage Undergraduates in Research and Inquiry

What must higher education do to prepare students for the complex and challenging decisions that they are likely to encounter throughout their lives?

An improved understanding of how students learn in higher education has shifted attention away from the lecture course as the predominant form of university teaching to more diverse and active course offerings. But there is still a mismatch between the kind of education being provided and the kind of outcomes for students that universities need to produce.

Students need not simply to be able to use existing knowledge however cutting edge it may be. In the work of organisations everywhere knowledge is now produced as a normal part of contemporary activity. Higher education needs to teach all students, not just research students, to engage as much in the production of knowledge, as in its acquisition.
