This session presents the current issues, opportunities and directions for education in a world powered by Web2.0, mobile, non-passive communication technologies. It is ideal for anyone trying to understand how social media impacts learning and teaching, the engagement of students, and the technologies that deliver enriched opportunities.  Set up and access from the LTC wiki.

Introduction to Blogging - part 2 - Tue 19 May, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to build on the information and skills introduced in part 1.  (If you didn’t attend Part 1, note that this workshop assumes an understanding of the basics of blogging).  We will take a look ‘behind the scenes’ of blogging and demonstrate how to increase readership, by promoting your blog, blog statistics and reader feedback/comments. We will also look at more examples of successful blogs and discuss ideas for using a blog in your own context. In preparation, please familiarise yourself with blogs by joining/active participation in our Community Interest Group.

Virtual Live Classroom Webinar - Wed 20 May, 12:30pm - 2:00pm

This hands-on workshop is a follow up from the introduction to the Virtual Live Classroom held on April 15th. In this workshop you will attend from your desk (ie remotely) so you will need an internet connection and a headset with a microphone. You will have the opportunity to trial the tools as both a ’student’ and as a ‘host/presenter/teacher’. The event starts officially from 1pm but the room will be ‘open’ for you to practice and fine-tune your computer and audio settings from 12.30pm. When you register for the workshop, we will send you a link and further details for the virtual classroom.

Using YouTube (and alternatives) to engage your students - Tue 26 May, 1:00pm - 2:00pm

Today’s learner is motivated by, and in, a variety of different ways. The purpose of this workshop is to think about how we can effectively utilise the educational value of video. Participants will be introduced to a number of available streaming media channels such as YouTube, TeacherTube, iTunesU, Edublogs.tv. We will investigate how to search (and evaluate) the vast repository of free media available on the Internet and then learn how to integrate this media into online units, lectures and tutorials to make them engaging to our students. If you have a laptop with a wireless connection, please bring it along.
