Biography

Cathy Rytmeister was appointed as Lecturer, Leadership and Management Development in July 2003. Prior to this appointment she held:

  • an academic appointment, first as Associate Lecturer, then promoted to Lecturer (2002), in the Department of Statistics, part of the Division of Economic and Financial Studies at Macquarie University;
  • an appointment as Research Officer – Data Analyst, at the Centre for Higher Education and Professional Development at Macquarie University;
  • various casual appointments as Research Assistant, Tutor and Examiner at several institutions including Macquarie (Numeracy Centre, Department of Mathematics, Department of Psychology, Department of Economics).

During her academic career Cathy has taught undergraduate and postgraduate classes in both face-to-face and online delivery modes. She was involved in a range of curriculum development projects in the Department of Statistics and was among the first staff members in that department to integrate online and face-to-face components in undergraduate teaching. In 2000 she received a Macquarie University Outstanding Teacher Award.

Cathy's research took a new direction with her transfer to CPD in 2003. Her switch from epidemiology and mathematical statistics to higher education policy and governance reflects her long-standing interest in education systems, policy and politics. The experience of serving on national policy committees of the NTEU and participation in local and national advocacy work triggered a particular interest in university governance and the political, social, economic and human factors that impact on the practice and effectiveness of university governing bodies. Cathy is currently engaged in PhD research on this topic.
