Macquarie University is a member of the Australian Universities Community Engagement Alliance.

Community Engagement is the intentional collaboration between higher education institutions and communities for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership.

Macquarie's Community Engagement Unit has been established under Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development and External Relations, to ensure that mutually valuable community partnerships are a vital part of our every-day teaching and research activities.

Throughout the university, there are innumerable community engagement activities taking place on a daily basis.

A Community Engagement Project is any project that "promotes direct and mutually beneficial interaction between universities and communities". The interaction may provide benefits at the social, environmental, economic and cultural levels.

Examples include research collaboration, sponsorship of art and cultural events, seminars, interaction with schools and use of University facilities.

The Community Engagement Unit is responsible for the Art Gallery, Museums, and Honours and Awards at the University.
