What does the Career Development Centre do?

The Career Development Centre is a confidential service for Macquarie students and recent graduates (up to 9 months from date of graduation). The mission of the Career Development Centre is to assist current and graduating students to make informed career decisions, to manage their careers in changing circumstances and to fulfill their true career potential. What's in the Careers Resource Centre?

The Careers Resource Centre is for current Macquarie students and recent graduates. It is a collection of career information to support your career enquiries.

Here are just some of the things you'll find in the Careers Resource Centre:

  • PCs for online job searching and researching employers.
  • Photocopier and printer.
  • TV, video & dvd player to watch recordings of careers events, such as the Media and Psychology seminars. We also have videos/dvds on job applications, interview techniques, assessment centres and networking.
  • Daily newspapers and magazines eg. BRW.
  • Jobs noticeboard: hardcopies of events & job posters posted.
  • Occupational/Discipline folders eg. Accounting, Actuarial, Psychology, English, Mathematics, Biology, Creative Arts, Law and more. Each file contains job samples, industry / career specific information, useful articles, newsletters, professional association and further study information.
  • Take Away Shelves: useful handouts, tips, phamphets on different careers and organistations.
  • FREE copies of Graduate Opportunities and UniGrad Books.

Which subjects should I study?

  • Refer to the Macquarie Handbook of Undergraduate Studies - this will include a listing of subjects & a brief description on each. 
  • You are encouraged to speak with an academic adviser from the department in which the course is offered to find out about credit points and subject content.
  • We can help you explore the career prospects of the subjects you choose. You can explore courses that suit your interests using resources such as the Job Guide and My Future. The Career Resource Centre also contains occupation files for all subject areas offered at Macquarie.

I would like to change courses, what should I do?

  • Read the Macquarie Handbook to see what other courses you may be interested in. 
  • Enquire at the Student Enquiry Service to find out about transferring courses. 
  • Speak to an Academic Adviser to find out about the workload and detailed course info (check the department website first).
  • Check out the Macquarie Graduate Destination Survey to find out where Macquarie graduates are employed.
  • Review the Occupational Files in our Careers Resource Centre - an excellent resource containing SAMPLE job advertisements and general information relating to specific disciplines/employers.

I am graduating soon and looking for full time employment. Where should I start?

  • Search for jobs via our CareerHub website. 
  • Check the newspapers (eg. SMH, The Weekend Australian & your local paper).
  • Community newspapers such as North Shore Times, Hills Shire Times, etc.

  • Register online with the major employment websites such as Seek and Career One.
  • Go to GraduateCareers, Graduate Opportunities & Unimail
  • After thoroughly researching the company you are interested in, approach the company directly (check their website first). 
  • Please note that applications start as early as Feb/March for graduate programs. 
  • Book into a workshop conducted by the Career Development Centre (workshops are offered throughout the semester). 
  • Use your networks, including your relevant professional associations.

Which organisations offer summer vacation work?

  • Summer vacation jobs are listed on CareerHub, type in "vacation" in the key word search. If a particular employer is not listed, then check the company website directly to see whether they offer summer vacation work. 
  • The website Graduate Opportunities has information on summer vacation opportunities. 
  • Note that the application period for summer vacation employment may start as early as May. Many employers require that you are in your penultimate year of studies (ie in your second last year of studies).

How can I find work on campus?

Vacancies are advertised directly on the CareerHub. Type in "campus" in the keyword search and all campus vacancies will be displayed. However, there are a number of other places on campus that offer employment opportunities for students, these include:

  • The Library - the Library recruits students once a year in February. Check Career Development Centre website from mid- January for details of eligibility and application procedures.
  • U @MQ - for jobs in the food outlets and shops on campus, keep checking the U@MQ website. Job listing will appear under "Job Shop" section.
  • Department/Division/Offices - occasionally, administrative, research or clerical work is available for students. Enquiries should be made directly with the departmental staff. 
  • Internships - if you are an international student studying at Macquarie as part of an exchange program, you may be eligible to participate in an internship. Contact staff at the International Office for more details or refer to their website.

How do I put together a job application / resume / CV?

  • Book into the Career Development Centre workshop on "Resumes & Cover Letters".
  • Check out Career Development Centre’s useful tips on CareerHub under 'Info Sheets'.
  • Watch one of our resume videos/dvds. 
  • View sample resumes from our large collection of books on Job Applications
  • Use CDO's resume review service. Available to students who have attended a Resume Preparation workshop. Written feedback on your resume will be provided within 5 working days.

How do I prepare for an interview?

  • Book into Career Development Centre workshop on "Interview Skills".
  • Check out useful tips listed on CareerHub - under 'Info Sheets'. 
  • Watch one of our interview technique videos/dvds. 
  • Write down sample interview questions and/or answers from our books on interviews.
  • Make an appointment for interview practice with Career Development Centre staff. Mock interviews are available to students who have attended an interview skills workshop and have secured an interview.
